Driver in six-vehicle crash in Melaka remanded for four days


MELAKA: A 35-year-old driver who rammed into five other vehicles, killing a motorcyclist at the Padang Jambu traffic light junction in Bukit Baru here, has been remanded for four days.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani to facilitate investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 on Wednesday (Feb 11)

In the incident at about 2pm on Tuesday (Feb 10), a motorcyclist was killed while four others, including the suspect, were injured after the car the latter was driving veered into the opposite lane.

The deceased was identified as Mohd Shahrol Anuar Md Roby, 44, who was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe head and body injuries.

The father of four was believed to have been on his way to pick up his child, a person with disabilities, from school.

The crash involved six vehicles- three motorcycles and three cars.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said initial investigations found that the driver of the Perodua Myvi was believed to have dozed off before entering the opposite lane and colliding with vehicles that were waiting at the traffic light junction.

He added that urine and breath screening tests conducted on the driver were negative for drugs and alcohol.
