Cops nab unemployed man, seize drugs worth RM2.185mil in Bukit Mertajam


BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police arrested a man and seized RM2.185mil of various types of drugs, including paraphernalia, in a raid in Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) here on Tuesday (Feb 10).

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Azizee Ismail said that based on tip-offs and intelligence gathered over the past few weeks, they raided a condominium in Bukit Mertajam at 4.25pm before arresting the 37-year-old, who was in a car.

"Upon interrogation, the suspect led police to a nearby premises believed to be used as a place to store and process drugs, including vape liquid.

"Police seized 3.7kg of Methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) powder, liquid syabu (19.7kg), ecstasy pills (5.18kg) and ketamine (980.5g), as well as various paraphernalia used to process vape liquid,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 11) night.

He said the suspect also admitted to storing drugs in a special compartment in his car, and upon further inspection, police found 18,000 Eramine 5 pills weighing 5,181.8g, as well as ketamine in crystal and powdered form weighing 980.5g.

Comm Azizee said preliminary investigations found that the man's drug trafficking activities are believed to have been carried out since last October, and the suspect is also believed to be linked to the drug syndicate network, with efforts underway to track down other members.

He said the unemployed man was believed to have raked in tens of thousands of ringgit each month, adding that the total drugs seized could have fed the habit of 100,000 addicts.

"The suspect tested positive for ketamine, amphetamine and methamphetamine, and also has prior drug-related records,” he said.

Police, he said, seized assets worth RM1,000 from the suspect, who has been remanded until Feb 17 to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.- Bernama
