Mechanic badly hurt in workshop explosion

KOTA BARU: A mechanic was seriously injured in an explosion, believed to have been caused by gas leaking from a vehicle’s air-conditioning unit, at a workshop in Tanah Merah.

Tanah Merah OCPD Supt Mohd Haki Hasbullah said the explosion occurred when Mohd Sharul Nizam Rahim, 31, was repairing a vehicle alone in the workshop in Kampung Air Merbau, Jedok, on Friday.

“We received tip-off about the incident from the public at around 8pm and found that the victim had sustained serious injuries to his right leg and was sent to Tanah Merah Hospital for further treatment.

“He is currently in the intensive care unit and is his condition has yet to be stabilised,” he said in a statement, Bernama reported.

Police were still looking into the cause of the explosion and preliminary investigations revealed that the cause might be due to an air-conditioning unit gas leak.

He added that a police forensic unit and a bomb disposal unit along with the Fire and Rescue Department were investigating the explosion.
