SUBANG JAYA: Police have seized contraband alcohol and cigarettes worth around RM1mil in a raid here.
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the raid was conducted on Feb 4 following information gathered on suspected smuggled alcohol in the area.
"Surveillance revealed activities involving the unloading of boxes suspected to contain alcoholic beverages from a bonded lorry into a premises. Following this, authorities raided the premises and arrested two foreign men aged 25 and 35 years.
"Further inspection of the premises uncovered various types of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes, as well as two lorries believed to have been used for distribution purposes," he said in a statement on Friday (Feb 6).
Preliminary investigations showed that the premises had been used as a storage facility for the past five months. Investigations also revealed that the alcoholic beverages were meant for distribution in the Subang Jaya market.
The suspects were found to have also printed fake Customs labels to mislead buyers and evade enforcement action.
"The seizure involved a total of 17,972 bottles and 2,796 cans of various brands of alcoholic beverages, along with 450 cartons of cigarettes, with an estimated total value of RM1,009,174.
“The value of the seized vehicles is estimated at RM214,000, bringing the overall value of the seizures to RM1,223,174," he said.
He added that the contraband was believed to have been in preparation to meet market demand in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations.
"Selangor police will continue to intensify enforcement efforts and urge the public to channel information to assist in curbing criminal activities that are detrimental to the country," he said.
