Eatery being probed for ‘recycling’ unsold food

SEREMBAN: A restaurant here is under investigation by state health authorities for “recycling” unsold food, allegedly by washing and recooking it before reselling it to customers.

State Health Department director Dr Zuraida Mohamed said that her officers are investigating the matter following the viral circulation of a video showing a worker allegedly “washing” unsold food items, including mutton, chicken and bean curd.

“I have just received information on this, and we are probing the incident,” she said when contacted yesterday.

A netizen had earlier posted a video recording of the incident, which allegedly took place behind the restaurant after midnight yesterday.

After “washing” the cooked food, the worker was seen placing it onto trays.

When asked by the person recording the scene why the washed food was placed on trays, he said the worker claimed it was to be recooked the following day.

Although the worker insisted that the practice did not compromise food safety, the individual questioned its appropriateness.

“This is completely unethical, unsafe and extremely disgusting.

“I will post photographs and video clips of the incident as evidence and upload them on social media,” the individual said in his Facebook post.

He urged the authorities to take action against the restaurant over the unhygienic practice.
