Alor Setar murder: Suspect in woman stabbing case nabbed on bus en route to Selangor

PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested a 29-year-old local man, believed to be the son of a 52-year-old woman who was stabbed to death in a house in Alor Setar, Kedah.

Kota Setar district police chief Asst Comm Syed Basri Syed Ali said the suspect was arrested at 8.34pm following an operation by the Kedah Contingent Criminal Investigation Department, with assistance from the Kota Setar district police headquarters Criminal Investigation Division.

He said the suspect was caught while travelling on a tour bus at KM441.5 southbound on the North-South Expressway heading towards Selangor, reported Sinar Harian.

“Checks found that the suspect has one previous criminal record.

“However, an initial urine screening test on the suspect was negative,” he said on Tuesday (Feb 3).

ACP Syed Basri said following the arrest, the suspect was brought before the Alor Setar Magistrate’s Court at about 8.30am and was remanded for seven days from Feb 3 to Feb 9 to assist in investigations.

He said Magistrate Nur Syifa Mohd Hamzah allowed the police’s remand application for the period to enable a thorough investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, and whipping, if convicted.

He advised the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could disrupt the investigation.

“Firm action can be taken against any individual who spreads false information and they may be investigated under the relevant legal provisions,” he added.

On Monday (Feb 2), the victim, known as Zahrullail Basir, was found dead with three stab wounds to the body, including her stomach, as well as cuts on her head and palms.
