KOTA KINABALU: Three immigrants were arrested over the past several days in Tawau District for various offences, including threats and immigration-related charges.
In the first incident, a man was arrested on Friday evening in Kg Merotai Besar for allegedly threatening and blackmailing a former acquaintance by using her personal videos and photos.
The suspect, in his 30s, was said to have demanded money from a woman in her 20s and threatened to spread her videos and photos if she did not pay by 10.35am.
“The woman claimed that the suspect often called her late at night with the intention of disrupting her peace and family harmony,” said Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin.
He said the woman was believed to have paid the suspect some money before deciding to lodge a police report for her safety, which led to the suspect’s arrest at around 5.45pm the same day.
In a similar case, an 18-year-old was arrested for allegedly threatening his friend via WhatsApp at Kampung Haji Sundu Batu 2 Jalan Apas.
The victim claimed that the suspect had made demands that he wanted the victim to follow and threatened to hurt him if he did not comply.
ACP Jasmin said the victim did not hesitate to lodge a report as he feared for his safety, and the suspect was arrested not long afterwards.
Both suspects in these cases will be investigated for criminal intimidation and under the Immigration Act, he said in a press statement on Sunday (Feb 1).
In another incident, an elderly woman was apprehended after she was caught using another person’s identification documents while seeking medical attention at a hospital in Tawau.
A hospital staff member, suspicious of the document presented, brought the woman to the National Registration Department to verify her MyKad, which was later found to belong to someone else.
ACP Jasmin said the woman, in her 80s, was taken to the police station to face investigations under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 for using or possessing an identity card issued to another person, and under the Immigration Act.
The MyKad was also confiscated for this investigation.
