SHAH ALAM: Selangor has been allocated RM450mil for the implementation of smart city initiatives, which include the expansion of fibre optic networks and public Wi-Fi facilities.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said during the exchange of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the state government and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) that the agreement aligns with the Smart Selangor Action Plan 2025 (SSAP).

This initiative aims for the state to emerge as a leader in the development of smart cities and the digital economy.

He said the agreement focused on three core fields under the coordination and monitoring of the Selangor Integrated & Intelligent Operations Centre (SIIOC).

“This includes the development of smart connectivity infrastructure, the enhancement of public safety and traffic management, and the implementation of smart flood management.

“The development of the smart connectivity infrastructure will be a foundation for this initiative,” he added.

The MOU exchange here yesterday was witnessed by Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, together with the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Fahmi said the expansion of fibre optic networks, public WiFi facilities, and support for the National Digital Network (Jendela) project would ensure wider, more stable and higher-quality Internet access for Selangor residents.

“Improved access to high-quality digital connectivity will also ensure that no group is left behind from the economic and social benefits of the digital era,” the minister added.

He said the initiative would also enhance public service efficiency and responsiveness, allowing safer urban environments and more organised, data-driven traffic and disaster management systems.

“Selangor is the most populous state in Malaysia, with a population of about 7.4 million. This reflects the large number of beneficiaries of any initiative, investment or service delivery,” he added.

Fahmi added that, as of last year, Selangor had 96.9% 5G coverage.

“This achievement is not merely a statistic but reflects the continuous commitment of His Royal Highness’ Government in ensuring that technological progress is enjoyed equitably by the people,” he said, adding that Selangor has emerged as a leading state in 5G coverage in Malaysia.

He said implementing smart city technologies will further strengthen both city planning capabilities and city management for Selangor.

“The initiative will also strengthen the state’s digital economy growth, encourage innovation and make it more attractive for strategic investment.”

Fahmi said the initiatives will be primarily executed by Smartsel Sdn Bhd, a state-owned company under Mentri Besar Selangor Incorporated.

“The strategic collaboration proves that a collaborative approach between the federal and state governments is key to the success of national digitalisation and the smart city agenda,” he added.

Also present at the event were Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din.
