KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has urged the introduction of laws related to national security and foreign threats, saying that evolving criminal trends could undermine social harmony and open up floodgates to more scam cases in the country.
His Majesty also said that any serious crime, as well as cases that touch on race, religion and royalty (3R), must be swiftly addressed by the authorities.
“The nation is facing a slew of modern threats on digital security, information integrity and the ‘deep-fake’ technology, which could lead to fraud cases and undermine social stability.
“Serious crime and violence, especially actions that touched on 3R issues, must be handled effectively,” said His Majesty during his Royal Address at the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament on Monday (Jan 19).
“Therefore, laws regarding national security and foreign threats should be established immediately because only in this way, harmony between all races and national sovereignty will always be preserved,” said His Majesty.
At the same time, Sultan Ibrahim said he welcomes efforts to strengthen laws regarding the elections, the democratic institution and political funding.
“This includes efforts to limit the prime minister’s term to two terms or 10 years, separating the role of the attorney general and the public prosecutor, the introduction of the freedom of information act and the Ombudsman institution,” said His Majesty.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Awnar Ibrahim said a bill to limit the prime minister’s term to no more than 10 years, or two full terms, will be tabled in the current Parliament session.
Anwar also said another proposed Bill to separate the powers of the Attorney-General and the Public Prosecutor, the freedom of information bill, and the Ombudsman Bill, will be tabled in the present Parliament session.
