Umno postpones party polls to focus on state elections, GE16, says Asyraf Wajdi

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno is postponing the party's election as it needs to remain united heading into the upcoming elections, says Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

The Umno secretary-general said the party needs to be better prepared for the possible Melaka state election and the 16th general election (GE16).

“The party must remain strong and united to contest as many seats as possible in any elections,” he said in a press conference held at the Laman Media at the Umno General Assembly 2025 here, on Saturday (Jan 17).

The Melaka and Johor state polls are most likely held this year, after their last state election held in November 2021 and March 2022, respectively.

On Friday (Jan 16), Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Umno elections will likely be held after GE16.

He said the party polls are allowed to be held after the GE16 based on the recent amendment to the Umno constitution.

On Thursday (Jan 15), Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusof confirmed that Melaka polls will be held this year.

Asked if Barisan Nasional will be forming a pact with Pakatan Harapan for GE16, Asyraf said no decision has been made yet on the matter.

He said the current focus for the party, as pointed out by Ahmad Zahid, is to prioritise the people and to ensure stability in the government.

“We do not want to make political decisions that may not only hurt the party but also affect the people. In which they will punish us at the elections,” he said.
