Factory supervisor, 65, loses over RM668,000 to investment scam

KULAI: A factory supervisor has lost RM668,800 after being duped by an online investment syndicate.

Kulai OCPD Asst Comm Tan Seng Lee said the 65-year-old man became interested in an investment scheme that promised returns of between 10% and 20% within 24 hours.

“The suspect claimed that the profits would be deposited into the victim’s account on the JBS Shop application.

“Enticed by the promised returns, the victim then made 25 payment transactions amounting to RM668,800 into 17 local bank accounts from Nov 28 last year until Jan 1 this year,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Jan 14).

He added that the victim later checked his JBS Shop account and found that it displayed profits amounting to US$102,303.64.

“However, when the victim tried to withdraw the money, he discovered that his account had been blocked.

“After suspecting he had been cheated, the victim lodged a police report on Tuesday,” he said.

ACP Tan said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating involving non-existent investments.

“If convicted, the offender can face imprisonment of not less than one year and not more than 10 years, whipping and a possible fine.

“I urge and advise members of the public not to be easily deceived by investment offers that promise high returns in a short period.

“The public is also advised to use the National Scam Response Centre at 997 provided by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID), use the CCID infoline and obtain updated information on commercial crime modus operandi through the Royal Malaysia Police Facebook page,” he said.
