Army graft probe: Defence Minister to issue statement on Jan 12, says Fahmi

BANGI: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin is expected to issue a statement on Monday (Jan 12) regarding issues related to defence procurement, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi said the matter had been conveyed to the Cabinet and that further clarification would come directly from the Defence Ministry.

“On issues related to procurement, it has been informed that the Defence Minister will be making a statement tomorrow,” he told reporters after the 2026 Madani Government Retreat here.

His comments came amid an ongoing investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) into alleged corruption involving procurement within the Army.

A senior military commander in his 60s was called to MACC headquarters earlier on Sunday (Jan 11) to assist with investigations, with his statement recording beginning at 11am.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that no arrests had been made so far.

Media reports have indicated that investigations are focusing on alleged organised bribery involving defence procurement, with the possibility that several other military officers could also be implicated.

Separately, Fahmi said the Cabinet had discussed, in general terms, the importance of managing information responsibly to prevent misinformation or damaging perceptions about the government.

“The importance of leadership, especially among Cabinet members, to ensure that accurate information is conveyed promptly, rather than allowing situations to develop in a way that could lead to incorrect perceptions,” he said.

Drawing on past experiences, Fahmi said these discussions served as lessons for ministers in handling sensitive issues more effectively.

“We did not go into excessive detail on any specific case, but we discussed the principles of how issues and problems should be addressed.

“Based on the discussion, most Cabinet members understand what needs to be done to ensure that issues can be managed comprehensively and resolved properly,” he added.
