All registered Malaysians in Iran safe, Wisma Putra advises postponing non-essential travel

PETALING JAYA: All Malaysians registered with the Malaysian embassy in Tehran, Iran, are safe, says the Foreign Ministry.

In a media advisory on Sunday (Jan 11), the ministry said it has actively reached out to registered Malaysians to ensure their wellbeing and to provide necessary updates.

"The Foreign Affairs Ministry, through the embassy in Tehran, is closely monitoring the unrest in Iran, with demonstrations spreading across the country.

"Malaysians residing in or travelling to the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and strictly follow safety instructions issued by local authorities," it said.

"Malaysians are also strongly encouraged to register their presence with the embassy to ensure timely communication.

"The Ministry also recommends postponing all non-essential visits to the country for the time being," it added.

A massive uprising has broken out in the Islamic Republic, involving over 180 cities in all 31 provinces.

This was following the collapse of the Iranian rial in December last year, which also saw inflation soar and caused prices of basic staples to be unaffordable.
