Nilai child abuse suspects remanded until Jan 14

SEREMBAN: Police have obtained a seven-day remand order on a couple suspected of abusing a 10-year-old boy in Nilai near here.

Nilai OCPD Supt Johari Yahya said on Thursday (Jan 8) that the alleged victim's 30-year-old mother and a 22-year-old man believed to be his stepfather will be remanded until Jan 14.

Police arrested the couple at around 2pm on Wednesday (Jan 7) and seized a clothes hanger and a phone charging cable from the duo.

A food delivery rider found the boy loitering outside a row of shops at 5.30pm on Tuesday (Jan 6) and called the police.

A physical examination by police personnel found possible signs of abuse on the boy, who was then taken to Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar for a medical check-up.

Supt Johari said the case is being investigated under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001, which covers the ill-treatment, neglect, abandonment, or exposure of a child by someone in a position of care, making it an offence to cause or permit physical or emotional harm.

Earlier, Supt Johari had said police found that the boy was treated for scalding at a government hospital in 2020.
