Limiting PM's tenure has its pros and cons, says Perak MB

IPOH: There are advantages and disadvantages in limiting the prime minister's term, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

The Perak Mentri Besar said an advantage would be when there are many talented and capable leaders to fill the role.

"(Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) would like the term to be limited when there are suitable successors.

"The United States and Singapore have done it (imposing a term limit), but this is something new to Malaysia," he told a press conference here on Thursday (Jan 8).

"The Prime Minister has lots of ideas (about) the future.

"(The term limit proposal) still needs to be brought to Parliament (to be debated)," he added.

At a special address in Putrajaya on Monday (Jan 5), Anwar said a Bill to limit a prime minister's tenure to 10 years or two full parliamentary terms has been drafted by the government and would be tabled when the Dewan Rakyat meets at the end of the month.

Saarani also said such a move could be derailed if there is opposition to it.

"There are some leaders whose vision is good.

"It may take about 10 years for (their plans) to materialise.

"But there may be opposition to the (term limit), and it is also not impossible that there could be a change in government, or a suitable replacement cannot be found. So there are pros and cons," he added.

Asked if a similar term limit could be placed on the mentri besar, Saarani said it would involve amending the state constitution and obtaining consent from the Perak Sultan.
