Flooding persists in Beaufort as Sabah sees overall improvement

KOTA KINABALU: Authorities expect the number of flood victims in Beaufort, about 100km from here, to rise as many affected residents have yet to register at relief centres amid continuing floods in the district, even as the overall situation in Sabah improves.

The state Civil Defence Department said the ongoing flood conditions in Beaufort could result in more victims being displaced overnight.

“A total of 14 villages in Beaufort remain affected by floods, which began over the weekend,” the department said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the disaster status in Kota Belud and Kota Kinabalu has been officially lifted, with evacuees allowed to return home following the closure of relief centres.

As of 4pm on Wednesday (Jan 7), more than 1,200 people from 420 families in Beaufort and Tenom remain housed at temporary relief centres.

Elsewhere in Sabah, authorities have received reports of a house being washed away in Kota Marudu, damage to roads and bridges, minor landslides, as well as thousands of homes and properties affected.

No casualties have been reported.
