KOTA KINABALU: A flood disaster has officially been declared here following continuous heavy rain since the afternoon.
Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah, who is also district disaster management committee chairman, said the declaration was made at 9pm on Saturday night (Jan 3) based on reports and ground assessments by relevant agencies.
He said the flood situation required immediate action to ensure safety of residents.
A temporary evacuation centre was opened at Dewan Masjid Al Munir in Kampung Darau, Manggatal for affected residents.
Several areas, including Inanam and Manggatal were reported to have been inundated after continuous rain since 4pm.
Kota Kinabalu City Hall activated its disaster operations control centre at the DBKK building, at 8pm on Saturday.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department has forecast no rain in the morning but thunderstorms and rain in several areas from afternoon till night for the Kota Kinabalu district on Sunday (Jan 4).
