12,000 summonses, 20 held in traffic blitz

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 12,437 summonses were issued for various offences while more than 20 individuals were detained during traffic operations conducted at over 240 locations nationwide beginning New Year’s Eve and stretched into the new year.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investiga­tion and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said 390 vehicles were seized while 25 individuals were detained for further action under various legal provisions, including the Road Transport Act 1987.

“A total of 20 individuals were detained under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, three under the Penal Code and another three under other laws,” he said in a statement.

He said the operation was conducted to ensure public safety, public order and smooth traffic flow in conjunction with New Year’s Eve celebrations.

“A total of 327 senior police officers and 2,460 personnel were deployed throughout the operation with the cooperation of other agencies, including the Road Transport Department (JPJ).”

In Kuala Lumpur, 378 summonses were issued and 90 motorcycles seized.

KL JSPT chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the motorcycle riders inspected were aged between 15 and 19.

Among the main offences detected were riding without a valid licence, expired road tax, and illegal modifications.

ACP Mohd Zamzuri said no untoward incidents occurred during the operation, although there were attempts by riders to flee.

In Selangor, state police chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar said 1,206 summonses were issued while seven individuals were detained.

“Ampang Jaya district recorded the highest number with 199 summonses, followed by Shah Alam (161) and Petaling Jaya (156).

This intensive enforcement also included actions taken in other districts such as North Klang (124), South Klang (80), Sungai Buloh (74), as well as other districts under the Selangor contingent, which remained under close police surveillance.
