IPOH: The Ipoh City Council (MBI) has begun repair and improvement works at the Kinta Riverwalk following public feedback and a report highlighting concerns over conditions at the popular riverside area here.
Perak housing and local government committee chairman Sandrea Ng said MBI's corrective measures include repairs and upgrades to signage at Kinta Riverwalk and Kinta Riverfront, as well as restoring the lighting system in certain areas.
She said the lighting issue was the result of power trips after heavy rainfall.
"Immediate action was taken to rectify the problem and restore normal lighting.
"To prevent similar incidents from recurring, MBI will conduct regular inspections and monitoring of wiring and lighting systems around the Riverwalk to ensure visitor safety and comfort," she said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 1).
Kinta Riverwalk has 18 business premises, with 15 units located on the upper level and three on the lower level.
Ng said interviews to fill five units that are still vacant were held on Dec 18, with four applicants making presentations.
"The final selection of tenants will be decided during an interview confirmation coordination meeting scheduled for Monday (Jan 5).
"Successful applicants will receive their letters of offer after the meeting," she added.
Ng said MBI has secured RM200,000 allocation from the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry to enhance lighting at two existing pedestrian bridges at Kinta Riverwalk.
She said an additional RM1mil allocation from the Housing and Local Government Ministry has been approved for decorative lighting, with RM500,000 allocated for Jalan Sultan Iskandar and another RM500,000 for Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab.
"We thank the public and media for their feedback.
"MBI remains committed to ensuring that public facilities at Kinta Riverwalk are well maintained, safe and comfortable, in line with Visit Malaysia 2026," she added.
