Nurse’s sacrifice brings hope to sick nephew

A NURSE in Johor Baru has volunteered to donate part of her liver to save her eight-year-old nephew, who suffers from a rare liver disease.

Siti Saleha Mokhtar, 40, told Berita Harian she made the decision after learning that Anaqi Mikhael Mohamad Sharafi, who was diagnosed with biliary atresia in 2018, had worsened since April and needed surgery urgently.

The nurse, based in Kota Tinggi, said she did not hesitate after being told that her blood group is compatible with her nephew.

“My blood group is the same as Anaqi’s, which is A+, while I was told that my brother-in-law is B+ and my brother is AB+.

“I was also told that the surgery needs to be done at Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in China.

“I did it entirely of my own free will,” she added.

Siti Saleh said her husband, who is also a healthcare assistant at Hospital Sultanah Aminah, fully supported her decision.

“As healthcare workers, we understand the risks and procedures. We have yet to be blessed with children of our own, and I see this as my gift to the family,” she said.

She said no date has been set for the surgery as the family is still raising funds to meet the estimated RM185,000 cost.
