Two names submitted for Perlis MB post

PETALING JAYA: The names of two candidates – one each from PAS and Bersatu – are being considered for the position of the next Perlis Mentri Besar.

PAS's Santan state assemblyman Azmir Azizan is said to have received the endorsement of the PAS Central Committee, while Kuala Perlis state assemblyman Abu Bakar Hamzah is believed to be the name submitted by Bersatu.

When contacted, Azmir said he found out through the media that he was being considered.

"I am at a kenduri now. I only know of this from media reports. I have no comments (on the matter at this moment)," he said.

However, sources from PAS have also confirmed that Azmir was the PAS state assemblyman endorsed by the party’s top leadership for the post.

Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional chairman and Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin confirmed that a Bersatu state assemblyman's name has been submitted to Istana Perlis to be considered for the position.

Perlis Mentri Besar Mohd Shukri resigned on Thursday (Dec 25), citing health reasons.

His resignation came after eight state assemblymen – three from PAS and five from Bersatu – allegedly signed statutory declarations retracting their support for him.
