Suspect in Serdang fast-food restaurant assault called up for questioning

PETALING JAYA: A 40-year-old woman has been called in to give her statement regarding an assault that occurred at a fast-food restaurant in Serdang Raya.

Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the case was being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

He said the incident occurred at about 4pm on Dec 8, when a 45-year-old woman was assaulted while working at the restaurant.

“Investigations found that the victim was approached by seven individuals, including the suspect, who is believed to be known to the victim through TikTok.

“The suspect allegedly punched the victim on the left side of her face about five times, causing swelling to her left cheek and a minor injury to the inside of her left lip,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Dec 18).

Earlier on Thursday, it was reported that the victim, Rani Arumugam, a disabled woman with spinal injuries from a previous accident, alleged that she was assaulted by the group while at work.

Rani claimed the incident occurred after she defended her cousin, who was mocked in a social media video.

"I posted a video defending my cousin, and then I started receiving threats," she said at a press conference on Thursday.

She alleged that the group included the individual who owns the social media account that posted the mocking video.

"I was punched and slapped multiple times," she said, adding that she suffered injuries to her left cheek and lips.

She also claimed the assault was livestreamed on TikTok, but it was deleted soon after.

Meanwhile, her lawyer, Preakas Sampunathan, said that several customers in the restaurant witnessed the incident.

"It left Rani emotionally distressed and traumatised. The group was then asked to leave the premises by the restaurant manager," he said.
