Sabah Umno committed to cooperation with GRS, says new chief

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno’s new chief, Datuk Jafry Ariffin, is committed to working with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to ensure the state’s political stability.

He said that in a multi-party state like Sabah, stability can only be achieved through mutual understanding, open communication and a readiness to work with one another.

“Sabah Umno is committed to playing a responsible and constructive role in the unity state government,” he said after his maiden visit to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on Thursday (Dec 18).

The courtesy call was the first for Sabah Umno’s new lineup and was aimed at discussing future developments as well as strengthening political ties and cooperation.

Jafry, who is also the state Tourism, Culture and Environment minister, said political stability is the basis for investor confidence and the well-being of the people.

“Therefore, mature and disciplined politics that work on cooperation have to be the focus and priority of Sabah’s current political landscape,” he said.

He added that differences in views had to be managed with care and institution without compromising on good governance, continued development and welfare of the people.

“We will continue to contribute actively and with principle within the state government to ensure that the voices and needs of the people remain the basis of our political direction,” he said.

Jafry took over as Sabah Umno chief following the death of Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin on December 5.
