PETALING JAYA: A 45-year-old disabled woman is claiming that she was assaulted by a group of seven people.
The victim, Rani Arumugam, who has spinal injuries from a previous accident, alleged the incident occurred at about 4pm on Dec 8 at a fast-food outlet where she works.
Rani claimed the incident occurred after she defended her cousin, who was mocked in a social media video.
"I posted a video defending my cousin and then I started receiving threats," she said at a press conference on Thursday (Dec 18).
She alleged that the group included the individual who owns of the social media account that posted the video.
"I was punched and slapped multiple times," she said, adding that she suffered injuries to her left cheek and lips.
She also claimed the assault was livestreamed on TikTok but it was deleted soon after.
Meanwhile, her lawyer Preakas Sampunathan said that several customers in the restaurant witnessed the incident.
"It left Rani emotionally distressed and traumatised. The group was then asked to leave the premises by the restaurant manager," he said.
Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Muhamad Farid Ahmad confirmed that a report had been lodged over the incident and that police would release a statement soon.
Preakas urged authorities to be more proactive in taking action against cyberbullies, particularly those who provoke others and incite hate.
He highlighted that amendments to Sections 507B–507G of the Penal Code, criminalise various forms of bullying, alongside existing provisions under the Communications & Multimedia Act 1998 targeting offensive content.
