Johor floods: New relief centre opens in Mersing, total now at three


JOHOR BARU: A new temporary flood relief centre (PPS) has been opened in Mersing bringing the total number of PPS in the district to three on Wednesday (Dec 17).

The state disaster management committee said the centre at SK Labong was opened at 5pm to house 66 Orang Asli flood victims from 12 families.

“They are from Kampung Orang Asli Labong which was the latest village to be hit by flood in Mersing district," it said in a statement.

The other two centres opened earlier Wednesday were SK Pusat Air Tawar and SJKC Chiao Ching when flood water started to hit Mersing at midnight.

The other three villages affected by the flood were Kampung Baru Air Tawar, Kampung Hubong, Kampung Belukar Juling and Kampung Semaloi.

The statement said the number of flood evacuees housed at the three PPS had risen to 317 victims from 87 families as of 8pm, compared with 266 people from 78 families at 6pm.

“Two rivers have exceeded the dang levels namely Sungai Muar at Segamat Kecil with the readings at 36.87m (dang level 36.70m) and Sungai Lenit at Ladang Chaah, Batu Pahat at 7.02m (danger level at 7.0m)," it said.

The other two rivers are on warning levels – Sungai Muar at Kampung Awat, Segamat at 19.53m (danger level at 19.95m) and Sungai Lenit Ladang Chaah, Batu Pahat at 6.83m with the danger level at 7.0m.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a continuous heavy rain and thunderstorm warning for Segamat, Kluang, Mersing and Kota Tinggi until Thursday (Dec 18).
