KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 78 vehicles were seized during a series of operations by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) as part of Ops Luxury 4.0 for multiple offences including the absence of valid road tax and insurance coverage.
JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the operation, which began on Dec 12, involved vehicles driven by both locals and foreigners.
“All the vehicles have been detained and seized for investigation under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he told a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur JPJ headquarters on Tuesday (Dec 16).
Among the main offences detected were driving without a valid motor vehicle licence (LKM), no insurance coverage, and expired or invalid driving licences. JPJ also detected cases involving fake registration plates.
Aedy Fadly said Ops Luxury 4.0 marked the fourth phase of the nationwide enforcement exercise, which has been ongoing since July 1.
“Since Ops Luxury began, a total of 705 luxury vehicles have been seized nationwide for various offences,” he said.
Highlighting the seriousness of the violations, Aedy Fadly said one Audi A8 seized during Ops Luxury 4.0 had outstanding road tax amounting to RM21,710, the highest recorded in the current phase. JPJ also detected a luxury vehicle that had failed to renew its road tax since 2021.
He noted that most vehicle owners claimed they had simply forgotten to renew their road tax, despite being able to afford high-end cars.
He stressed that JPJ would not compromise with any party, including owners of luxury vehicles, who failed to comply with road transport laws.
“Vehicle owners may be able to afford luxury cars, but renewing road tax and insurance is not optional. Driving without them poses serious risks to other road users,” he said.
He said the operation would continue to be strengthened from time to time as part of its efforts to ensure road safety.
