Flood: Govt ​​​​​​gears up for rise in victims at shelters should situation worsen


KUCHING: The Social Welfare Department ​​​​​​in each state is prepared to face a possible increase in the number of flood victims at temporary relief centres if the flood situation worsens.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has upgraded the continuous heavy rain warning to the orange level for several states on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

This follows the current Northeast Monsoon surge, which is expected to last until Dec 18.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the presence of the Social Welfare Departmentin every district allows for immediate assistance to be implemented if needed.

"All relevant parties have been asked to be fully prepared to ensure that the safety and well-being of the people continue to be protected," she told reporters after the Program Ceria Kasih Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN) and Back to School Contribution for the 2026 School Session here on Sunday (Dec 14).

Nancy said that as of 4,30pm, eight PPS were still operating in five states across the country, involving 93 families with a total of 219 victims.

The Social Welfare Department has taken immediate action, including opening PPS, self-registration of victims through the MyIBJKM system, as well as distribution of basic necessities assistance

"Relief supplies are reported to be sufficient to meet the needs of all victims placed in shelters," she added. — Bernama
