No dangerous substances released into the air following chemical spill, says Bomba

PASIR GUDANG: There are no dangerous substances released into the air following the chemical spill at the Tanjung Langsat industrial area here on Friday (Dec 12).

Pasir Gudang Fire and Rescue Station deputy chief Sarhan Akmal said the Johor Fire and Rescue Department’s Hazmat team had conducted inspections on the air quality in the areas.

“No dangerous readings were detected and the material content was too low at the spill area," he said in a statement.

“Inspections were conducted in five areas and only one area had substance readings above normal levels," he said, adding that a drone was also used to monitor the area where the spill took place.

Sarhan said further evaluation was also conducted at the drainage and river following heavy downpour at 3.15pm which washed away the spilt chemical into the water bodies.

“No dangerous vaporisation was spotted in the water," he said, adding the Department of Environment and Johor Corporation, the developer of the Tanjung Langsat industrial area, to undertake the cleaning activities.

Sarhan said police had also cordoned off Jalan Teruntum 3, where 3,000 litres identified as acetic acid and ethyl formate had spilt.

Acetic acid is a simple organic acid known for its pungent smell, while ethyl formate is a fruity-smelling ester used as a flavouring and solvent.
