Malaysians in Cambodia advised to avoid travel to border provinces amid conflict

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian citizens in Cambodia are advised to avoid non-essential travel to certain places in the country for safety reasons.

The Malaysian Embassy in Phnom Penh (the advisory for Malaysian citizens in Cambodia) said in light of the situation between Cambodia and Thailand, Malaysian citizens in Cambodia are advised to avoid non-essential travel to certain places.

"Avoid travel to Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang and Pursat Provinces until further notice.

"Malaysian citizens in Cambodia are advised to stay informed through reliable news sources as well," it said in a statement on Thursday (Dec 11).

It was reported on Wednesday (Dec 10) that at least 11 soldiers and civilians have been killed on both sides of the Thai and Cambodian conflict.

The embassy urged Malaysians in Cambodia to strictly follow instructions and advisories.

"Adhere to any instructions and advisories issued by the local authorities and government agencies," it said.

For further information contact the embassy via e-mail at mwphnompenh@kln.gov.my and their 24-hour hotline (+855 12 216 176) or visit https://www.kln.gov.my/web/khm_phnom-penh/home.

This week's clashes are the deadliest since five days of fighting in July that killed dozens before a shaky truce was agreed, in large part owing to intervention by US President Donald Trump.

Both sides blame each other for sparking the renewed clashes, which on Tuesday (Dec 9) expanded to five provinces of both Thailand and Cambodia.
