10 Sabah businesses found selling electrical goods without Sirim labels

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Energy Commission (ECoS) has found 10 business premises here selling consumer electrical equipment without Sirim approval labels.

ECoS chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said the businesses were given two weeks to remove the items or have them confiscated and face legal action.

"Our inspections found that these premises were selling consumer electrical equipment and gas appliances without the Sirim Safety Label," he said in a statement on Monday (Dec 8).

"Premises that fail to withdraw this equipment (within 14 days) will face legal action.

"If convicted, they could be fined up to RM20,000 or imprisoned for up to two years, or both, in accordance with Regulation 134 of the Electricity Supply Regulations 2024," he said.

The operation was conducted to ensure that only consumer electrical equipment and gas appliances that have been tested for safety and received the Sirim label are sold to the public, he added.

Under Regulation 117 of the Gas Supply Regulations 2023, business operators who fail to withdraw gas appliances without the safety label face fines of up to RM500,000.

For continuing offences, additional fines may be imposed for each day the offence continues after conviction, in line with Subsections 62(1) and (2) of the Gas Supply Enactment 2023, Nasser added.
