KUCHING: Two five-year-old girls who were reported missing in Kampung Pasir Pandak, Santubong, near here on Saturday (Dec 6) have been found safe.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Operations Centre, in a statement, said the two children were found by villagers in Batu Gelingan, near the beach, about 1km from the operations control centre, at 9.50am on Sunday (Dec 7).

"The two victims were then taken to the Sarawak General Hospital for further treatment, and the operation ended at 10.06 am," according to the statement.

Earlier, the operations centre had reported that two five-year-old girls were reported missing while heading to their grandmother's house to play with their cousins yesterday at about 9 am on Saturday.

The incident was discovered by their father at 11 am the same day, and initial search efforts were carried out by families around the village, but failed to find them.

According to the centre, a police report regarding the disappearance was also filed at 6 pm on Saturday.

The girls, Humaira Qalesya Mohd Dir were reported to be wearing a black and white striped shirt, blue jeans and green slippers, while Nur Ashafieya Aisyah and Nasru Asrafie were wearing a white shirt and purple slippers.

The uncle of one of the victims, Mohd Zulkifli Safiee, who was met at the scene, said he was moved to search the location where the child was found, which was a rocky area that led to the discovery.

"At first, the area was checked, but I went back because my hunch said they were still there, and it was correct.

"When I met them, I asked why they went to that area, they said there was an 'older sister' who took them to bathe in the sea. "Both of them were sitting on the rock together in a weak and confused state," he said when met at the scene of the incident.

Earlier, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri was also present at the search location to learn about the operation's progress and meet the children's families. – Bernama
