KUALA LUMPUR: Padang Serai MP Datuk Azman Nasrudin (pic) is expected to be charged over an alleged corruption case linked to a Kedah state-owned cattle farming joint venture project.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that the lawmaker will be charged tomorrow alongside another individual.
Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the coalition will leave the matter entirely to the MACC, following Azman’s detention in connection with the case.
According to Sinar Harian, he said Perikatan would not interfere and would allow the legal process to run its course.
“We leave it to the legal process and will wait for the outcome of the investigation. The matter is still under investigation, so I cannot comment further,” he told reporters after attending the Majlis Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat at the Kelantan Trade Centre on Friday.
Takiyuddin said Perikatan is transparent about the issue and hopes the Padang Serai MP will be given his right to legal representation.
It was earlier reported that Azman had been detained by the Kedah MACC for the purpose of being charged, after prosecutors approved the case for court action.
The case centres on a state feedlot joint venture project.
Sources said the arrest followed investigations that began in February and involved an alleged sum of about RM400,000 to facilitate approval for land use rights for the feedlot project.
An investigation paper was opened on Feb 10 after a report was lodged. Around 15 individuals are believed to have had their statements recorded.
Azman later confirmed that he had been detained by the MACC in relation to the Kedah cattle project but questioned why his status had shifted from witness to accused.
The MP said he had previously visited the Kedah MACC office on March 25 as a witness assisting the investigation into the project under Kedah Agro, but later received a sudden instruction to meet an investigating officer at the Sungai Buloh northbound R&R.
