KUALA LUMPUR: Wanita MCA is gearing up to groom more capable women candidates ahead of the next general election, says its chief Datuk Wong You Fong.
She said the wing’s focus, following the Sabah state election, is to strengthen party work and prepare more qualified women to contest and win seats for MCA.
“After the Sabah state election, we will soon face the general election,” she said.
“We must do our party work well, train more outstanding women candidates, help MCA secure more seats and bring in more capable women,” she added.
Wong was speaking at the Wanita MCA pre-AGM dinner held at Dewan San Choon, Wisma MCA, on Friday (Dec 5).
The Wanita MCA annual general meeting will take place on Saturday.
She stressed that Wanita MCA wants to pass on its fighting spirit and values to the next generation of women leaders.
“We hope this spirit will continue. For those of us in leadership positions, we know it has not been easy for the women’s wing to grow to where it is today,” she said.
The dinner also marked the 50th anniversary of Wanita MCA, featuring programmes under the theme “Remarkable Women: Frontiers of the Future”, with flowers as the central motif.
Each state Wanita MCA representative group performed during the event.
“Tonight’s performances by the women’s wings from all states are very heart-warming,” Wong said.
“As we celebrate 50 years, we are filled with memories and emotion. The spirit of continuity is very important. Our leaders have passed the torch from one generation to the next,” she added.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong also attended the dinner.
He wished Wanita MCA a smooth and successful annual general meeting on Saturday and a pleasant evening for all delegates.
Wanita MCA has a total of 1,728 central delegates, with 978 attending the pre-AGM dinner across 103 tables.
