KUALA LUMPUR: All eyes are on the Dewan Negara, as the senatorship of several ministers is ending this week.
Sources told The Star that while the swearing-in ceremony is on the Dewan Negara agenda for Wednesday (Dec 3), the Senate is still awaiting letters on the senatorship extension for the three ministers from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
"It is supposed to be tomorrow (Wednesday), but there has yet to be a letter from the PMO on their extension," a source said on Tuesday (Dec 2).
The three ministers whose three-year term is ending are Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar; Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail; and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
They were sworn in as senators on Dec 3, 2022, coinciding with the swearing-in of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Cabinet after the 15th General Election.
Earlier reports suggested that the swearing-in was to take place on Tuesday, but the Dewan Negara proceeded with its business.
Along with the three current ministers, new faces could be sworn in to fill the vacancies in the Cabinet.
Among the names in the mix are former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
