Firefighters rescue lost hiker who shared location via WhatsApp

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A 25-year-old woman who lost her way while hiking at the Bukit Mertajam Forest Park has been rescued by firefighters after sharing her location via WhatsApp.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department Assistant Director of Operations, John Sagun Francis, said the victim, who went missing on Sunday (Nov 30) morning, was found safe.

He said the department received an emergency call at 11.20am notifying them that the victim was missing in the forest.

"The search-and-rescue operation involved six personnel from the Bukit Mertajam Fire and Rescue Station, with assistance from the police and members of the public.

“The victim was found safe, brought to the foothill, and reunited with her family, who were also present at the scene," he said in a statement.

In a separate incident at Krystal Heights, Taman Island Glades, Gelugor, a man suffered injuries to his neck and leg after falling into a drain that was more than two metres deep.

John said the department received a call at 1.23pm and immediately dispatched a team of eight personnel along with two vehicles to the location to rescue the victim, who had reportedly slipped while trying to open his car boot.

"The victim was successfully lifted from the drain and given initial treatment by the Fire Department's Emergency Medical Response Services unit and officers from the Health Ministry before being taken to the hospital for further treatment," he said. – Bernama
