‘Zafrul will continue to serve the govt under a new role’

PUTRAJAYA: Following the end of his senatorship, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz is expected to perform his duties under a new role that is set to be announced later.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic) said the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, who will be completing his second term as senator next Tuesday, will continue to serve the government.

“Today (yesterday) was his last Cabinet meeting and the Prime Minister has expressed gratitude for his service and successes, including in areas of investment and negotiation.

“(Tengku Zafrul) will continue to assist the government, maybe in a different role in the future.

“But the role was not specified,” Fahmi said during the post-Cabinet meeting press conference yesterday.

Tengku Zafrul, who has served as senator for two terms since 2020, will complete his six-year tenure in the Dewan Negara on Dec 2.

He was appointed as senator to join the Cabinet under then prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, and has since served in multiple administrations including under the government led by Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

On another matter, Fahmi said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has warned that no individuals will be protected by the government if they are linked to investigations by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

He said the Prime Minister brought up the matter during the Cabinet meeting, while addressing the graft scandal involving his senior political secretary, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, who recently resigned.

“The Prime Minister stressed that he will not protect any party or individual if there are matters that need to be investigated by the authorities including the MACC.

“He reminded all Cabinet members to constantly monitor their officers as no protection will be given should any misconduct occur.

“(The Prime Minister stressed that) No one is exempt from the law in our country,” he said.
