A MAN was detained by police in Besut, Terengganu, for stealing while the congregation was praying, Kosmo! reported.

Besut district OCPD Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the arrest followed a report lodged by the mosque committee at Masjid Gong Mak Som, Kampung Raja, at 8.27pm on Tuesday.

Police arrested the 30-year-old suspect at a house in Kampung Gong Tok Dor, Jerteh, at 7.20am on Thursday.

The suspect was accused of stealing two bags belonging to two female congregants.

CCTV footage shows the suspect entering the women’s prayer area before stealing the bags.

“The suspect had also admitted to being involved in a theft case at another mosque in Jerteh.

“A raid at the house in Kampung Gong Tok Dor led to the discovery of two handbags, a prayer bead strand, a small zipped pouch, four books and three sets of keys,” said Supt Azamuddin.

> The strong currents and large waves brought by the north-east monsoon resulted in the accumulation of domestic and “foreign” waste along the coastline in Terengganu.

The volume of the rubbish is expected to increase until March when the annual monsoon season ends, according to Geng Plastik Ija (GPI), a non-governmental organisation.

GPI chairman Zulkefli Sarji told Berita Harian that the presence of rubbish, particularly plastic bottles, not only spoils the view but also poses a serious threat to the marine ecosystem.

He said the rubbish washing up along beaches from Kemaman to Besut seems to be an annual phenomenon in recent years.
