Nepalese worker crushed to death by steel gate at Penang hostel

BUTTERWORTH: A 37-year-old Nepalese worker was crushed to death by a steel gate at a hostel here.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Assistant Director of Firefighting and Rescue Operations Division, John Sagun Francis, said the victim Bhujel Ram was found unconscious under the gate early Wednesday (Nov 26) morning.

"We received a report at 4.55am about a man lying unconscious under a gate.

"Our emergency response team arrived at the scene at 5am to find a man crushed under the premises gate.

"Upon arriving at the scene, the team carried out rescue works by removing the gate.

"The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The body was then handed over to the police for further action and the operation concluded at 6.16am," he said in a statement today.

John Sagun said based on information from the guard in charge of the premises and CCTV footage at the scene, it was found that the victim had collapsed while trying to open the gate by himself.

"During the incident, the guard was not present as he was patrolling around the premises," he said.
