LHDN continuing court action in recovery of RM1.69bil tax arrears from Najib, Dewan Rakyat told

KUALA LUMPUR: The Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) will continue case management to seek further directions from the Insolvency High Court on its bid to recover RM1.69bil in unpaid tax from Datuk Seri Najib Razak, says the Finance Ministry.

It said Najib’s income tax arrears for the assessment years 2011 to 2017 totalling RM1.7bil have not been settled, as ordered by the Kuala Lumpur High Court through a summary judgment in 2020.

LHDN began civil action to recover the amount in 2019 and later filed a bankruptcy notice in 2021.

Najib then applied to suspend the bankruptcy proceedings and to set aside the notice. His application was dismissed last year, and he filed an appeal this year/

"On Nov 17, the High Court dismissed Najib’s appeal to stay the proceedings, with costs. He has since filed a further appeal at the Court of Appeal," the ministry said in a written parliamentary reply on Tuesday (Nov 25).

Pang Hok Liong (PH-Labis) had asked whether or not Najib had settled the RM1.69bil owed to LHDN and, if not, why firmer action had not been taken to recover the sum.
