PETALING JAYA: It was scare after scare for the residents of Jalan Klang Lama as continuous rain wreaked havoc across the Klang Valley, with landslides, flooding, fallen trees and even disruptions in LRT and bus services.
Among the worst hit was Taman United along Jalan Klang Lama where first, a 60m-long retention wall collapsed after a landslide along Jalan Sepadu 7 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday morning.
At 4pm, heavy rain caused another slope to collapse, this time along Lorong Jugra Dalam here, about four kilometres from the first landslide.
A 10m-high slope next to Block D Sri Lempah Flats had collapsed, damaging a parked car, Bernama reported, with firefighters from the Sri Petaling Fire and Rescue Station rushing to the scene.
In the morning incident, several houses were damaged while residents of two blocks of low-cost flats, comprising 104 units, had to pack up and evacuate due to continued soil movement and heavy rain.
According to the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department, debris from the retention wall fell onto the road, burying a car and toppling another.
Several motorcycles parked by the roadside were also affected.
The collapse also affected parts of the neighbourhood cul-de-sac, Lorong Sekata 1, which is located above the retaining wall. Two bungalows, located at the end of the road, were also affected.
No casualties were reported and the department remained on site to monitor further ground movement.
Kuala Lumpur’s new Mayor Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud visited the site to check on the situation.
In a statement, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said that it is conducting a water diversion operation to block the flow of water to the affected area.
“This reduces the risk of land movement before subsequent work is carried out. The DBKL will continue to monitor the soil movement along Jalan Sepadu 6 and Jalan Sepadu 7,” the statement read.
In Shah Alam, several areas saw water levels rising, namely in Taman Desa Kemuning in Section 35, Kampung Budiman in Section U14, Kampung Kubu Gajah in Section U17, Giant in Section 13, Taman Sri Lembayung in Section 25, Jalan Opera in Section U2 and Persiaran Jubli Perak in Section 19.
The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) said Jalan Mat Raji in Padang Jawa Section 16, Jalan Mantap 25/126 in Section 25, Jalan Sentosa 25/129 in Section 25, Persiaran Budiman in Section 25 and Persiaran Perusahaan in Section 23 were also affected.
RapidKL bus services to some these places were also temporarily suspended.
Additionally, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, in its update, said 26 victims have been evacuated as of 8am yesterday, bringing the total evacuated victims to 39 involving 10 families in Dewan Sri Bernam.
It said Sabak Bernam district was also hit by floods while other stations in Sungai Besar, Bestari Jaya, Shah Alam and Bukit Jelutong are monitoring the situation closely.
MStar reported that the heavy rains have caused water to drip into a Light Rail Transit (LRT) train on the Kelana Jaya line with services delayed.
Based on a post on Threads, rainwater was seen dripping from the roof and entering the train compartment.
Several trees were also reported to have fallen under the Bangsar LRT station near Jalan Ang Seng, causing damage to several cars.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said the department is actively monitoring the current situation involving 16 areas across the state, including Sri Muda, Kampung Baru Hicom, Jalan Kebun, Padang Jawa, which are all flood-prone areas.
