Continuous rain triggers landslide in Lumut, 12 evacuated


IPOH: Five houses were almost buried by a landslide at Taman Bukit Maju in Lumut.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department acting assistant director of operations Shazlean Mohd Hanafiah said the incident is believed to have occurred at about 7.40am on Monday (Nov 24).

"When we arrived, we found that a landslide had occurred behind the houses. Three were inhabited and two were not.

"The 12 inhabitants had evacuated their premises before we arrived," he said in a statement.

The landslide follows heavy rainfall since Sunday (Nov 23).

Meanwhile, the number of flash flood victims has increased, with the figure now at 1,786 people.

A state Disaster Management Committee spokesman said that the victims have been sent to 20 temporary relief centres (PPS) in Perak Tengah, Manjung, Hilir Perak and Larut, Matang and Selama.

According to the Meteorological Department, rainfall is expected to continue throughout the state until night.
