ALOR SETAR: A Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) student stranded in Hatyai, Thailand, due to flooding, is urgently seeking assistance, particularly food supplies.
Mimi Nadzirah Afiqah Md Suhaimi, an accounting student, said she and 35 other students, reportedly part of the Thai-MYS Cultural Exchange Programme 2025, were depending on the limited food supply.
"Right now, we are staying at Wangburapa Grand Hotel, Hatyai. There is no electricity and no water supply.
"We have an inadequate food supply and only very limited light food. The phone lines are unstable, so it's hard to communicate," she posted on WhatsApp on Saturday (Nov 22), adding that all the students and the four lecturers were relying on whatever resources were available at the moment.
As of 9.43pm on Saturday, Thailand time, rain was still falling, and the water level was still rising with strong currents in flooded areas.
"The flood has entered the hotel's ground floor. Alhamdulillah, we are at level five. But outside the hotel and its surrounding areas, including the roads, they are flooded.
"Trucks, pickups or four-wheel drive vehicles all can't get through the hotel area as the water level is really high, exceeding that of the truck," she said.
UUM deputy vice chancellor (student affairs and alumni), Prof Dr Ahmad Martadha Mohamed, who is acting as UUM vice chancellor, confirmed that 36 students and four lecturers from the university were stranded in Hatyai. – Bernama
