TANGKAK: A 59 year old factory operator lost more than RM72,000 after falling for an online parcel scam involving a supposed cash gift from a Facebook acquaintance.
Tangkak OCPD Supt Roslan Mohd Talib said the victim lodged a report on Saturday (Nov 22) after realising she was deceived.
He said the victim made 12 transactions totalling RM72,175 into a single bank account between Friday (Nov 21) and Saturday.
“The victim was promised a gift worth US$195,000 (RM810,203) by a Facebook acquaintance. She realised she had been cheated after informing her family,” he added on Sunday (Nov 23).
Supt Roslan added the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
He said the public should remain vigilant and not be fooled by parcel or gift delivery scams, especially online.
Supt Roslan added that people should conduct proper checks before making any payments to avoid becoming victims.
“The public should follow the Commercial Crime Investigation Department’s Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for updates on scam tactics,” he said.
Supt Roslan said those who believe they have been scammed should call the National Scam Response Centre at 997 immediately.
He said swift action can help block the outflow of funds from a suspect’s account.
