Armed Forces mobilise for monsoon aid

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) have mobilised 4,428 personnel for humanitarian and emergency operations during the north-east monsoon season, which began on Nov 13, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The Defence Minister said the ATM is supported by 506 land, 7,355 maritime and 19 air assets.

Mohamed Khaled said the mobilisation is part of ATM’s proactive measures under Ops Murni to assist the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) during the monsoon period.

“Army Chief Jeneral Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan has been appointed to helm the Ops Murni mission, while the Army Operations and Training Branch serves as Nadma’s point of contact.

“In addition, 15 military commanders consisting of division and brigade commanders in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak have also been appointed to ensure effective execution,” he told the media at the Kementah Camp here yesterday, Bernama reported.

Earlier, he received a briefing on Ops Murni at the camp. The briefing detailed ATM’s preparedness to deploy personnel and assets to the affected areas for humanitarian and emergency assistance.

He also conducted an inspection of the 17 Ops Murni assets at the camp, which included various military trucks, water trailers, field ambulances, safety-equipped boats and modular tents, all ready for deployment.

Elaborating further, Mohamed Khaled said MetMalaysia has forecast continuous rainfall following the onset of the north-east monsoon until the end of March 2026, affecting states such as Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Sabah.

He emphasised that the Armed Forces consistently maintain their personnel, assets and all three service branches – the Army, Navy and Air Force – at an optimal level to ensure a rapid response.

“This effort reflects ATM’s commitment as not only the cornerstone of national defence, but also as an organisation dedicated to public safety and well-being at all times.”

Mohamed Khaled added that Nadma has supplied modular (Bailey) bridges, which can be mobilised as required by the situation.

“The ATM will focus on areas showing an increased risk of flooding, based on real-time monitoring once rainfall begins.”

Ops Murni is being conducted in line with the whole of government, whole of society approach and the aspirations of the Defence White Paper through the Comprehensive Defence concept to protect the public during emergencies and disasters.
