SHAH ALAM: Selangor is allocating RM54.34mil to enhance flood mitigation with 17 new projects, says the Mentri Besar.
Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the river basins involved include Sungai Klang (RM16.92mil), Sungai Langat (RM16.51mil), Sungai Selangor (RM5.74mil), Sungai Buloh (RM1mil), and Sungai Bernam and Kapar Besar (RM2.8mil).
“Greater emphasis is given to the Sungai Klang and Sungai Langat river basins which are facing rapid development, leading to increased surface water flow. This has resulted in frequent and severe flash floods, and monsoon floods.
“The implementation of these flood mitigation projects will be strengthened through integrated and strategic collaboration with the Federal Government, so that the solutions designed are truly holistic, sustainable and high impact in controlling and reducing the risk of flood disasters in Selangor,” he said when tabling Selangor’s 2026 budget at the State Assembly yesterday, Bernama reported.
Amirudin also announced a RM11.51mil allocation for the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), and 10 new projects to conduct technical expertise services to ensure all river basins are managed meticulously.
He said holistic river basin management was key to the sustainability of Selangor’s water sources, with any development to be implemented in an integrated manner.
The Mentri Besar said this should be the main strategy in preserving, managing and developing water and land resources across all sectors.
Amirudin said Selangor JPS has also been allocated RM12.89mil, with 10 new projects to strengthen the state’s drainage system capacity.
He said this was to increase the existing drainage capacity in high-risk areas, as well as improve internal drainage systems to handle heavy rainfall and high water flow.
On development in coastal areas, Amirudin announced a RM4mil allocation to implement 11 new projects, encompassing work to improve and strengthen coastal embankments in affected areas.
He said coastal area development was crucial in ensuring the safety of residents and sustainability of the coastal ecosystem.
“The phenomenon of climate change and high tides, which are occurring more frequently, demand more proactive and effective measures to strengthen the state’s protective barriers, especially in Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor and Kuala Langat,” he added.
