SPM student died in collision after swerving into bus lane, cops say

GEORGE TOWN: A student who was killed while riding his motorcycle in Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway was found to have swerved into the lane of a bus before he collided with it.

George Town OCPD ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the 17-year-old was travelling from Gat Lebuh Macallum towards his home at Summer Place, Persiaran Karpal Singh during the 11am incident on Thursday (Nov 13).

“The victim is believed to have changed lanes and collided with a bus travelling straight on the left lane near the flyover in front of the Mutiara Line LRT station construction site,” he said.

He said the victim died at the scene due to the impact of the crash.

“A post-mortem carried out by the Penang Hospital forensic department found that the cause of death was head and neck injuries consistent with a road traffic collision,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

It was reported that the student, identified as Jason Lee from St Xavier's Institution (SXI) is currently taking his SPM examinations.

He was initially believed to have been a victim of a hit-and-run.

Checks at the scene found that the dedicated motorcycle lane along the stretch had been closed during the incident, which was believed to be the reason why Lee had taken the main road.

It was reported that police have preliminarily confirmed the vehicle involved in the fatal accident was a Rapid Penang bus and that the driver had voluntarily lodged a report at the police station after the incident.

According to reports, police reviewed CCTV footage before contacting the bus company, which confirmed that the driver had cooperated with the investigation after dropping off his passengers.
