Oops! They left their MyKad at the petrol station

PETALING JAYA: As the Budi Madani RON95 fuel subsidy programme enters its second month, some forgetful drivers are leaving their MyKad behind at petrol stations.

Petroleum Dealers Association of Malaysia president Datuk Khairul Annuar Abdul Aziz said such incidents happen occasionally, particularly during busy periods.

“Sometimes one or two, here and there. It doesn’t happen frequently at most stations, though,” he said yesterday.

The pattern, he explained, often follows traffic flow. “Some stations see it in the morning, others after work, but usually during rush hour,” he added.

Khairul noted that motorists who do not use mobile apps for refuelling are more likely to leave their MyKad behind.

He explained that app users only need to verify their identity once with their MyKad, which helps prevent the card from being left at the station.

The association will meet today to discuss more comprehensive standard operating procedure, including the handling of “abandoned” MyKads, he said.

Khairul reminded the public to always keep track of their MyKad, describing it as a valuable asset.

“Always double-check whether you’ve taken it back. Misplacing the card can risk misuse, including someone tapping into your fuel quota if a card is mishandled,” he said.

A petrol station dealer who requested anonymity said such cases are “isolated” but unsurprising during busy periods.

“People leave all sorts of things – loyalty cards, payment cards, handphones, water bottles, items they paid for but forgot – and now, sometimes, MyKad,” he said.
