BUKIT MERTAJAM: Penang’s transport and logistics network is set for a major boost with two key federal projects.
They are the expansion of the cargo terminal at Penang International Airport (PIA) and the upgrading of KTM’s Butterworth train terminal.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke (pic) said the airport’s cargo terminal expansion, which is an addition to the ongoing RM1.2bil airport expansion, includes plans to enlarge the air cargo terminal and develop a new logistics park in Batu Maung in collaboration with the Penang Development Corporation (PDC).
“The Penang airport plays a critical role as an engine of economic growth.
“It not only brings in passengers and tourists, but is also the heartbeat of our semiconductor and electronics exports.
“The expansion of the air cargo terminal will double its capacity from three aircraft bays to six,” said Loke during the DAP state convention here yesterday.
As for the KTM Butterworth station, which is a major hub in the rail network, Loke said it will undergo a RM30mil upgrade to improve services and passenger facilities, with the contractor expected to be appointed next month.
He said the project will strengthen Penang’s transport connectivity and support the growth of the Seberang Perai transport hub, complementing other major infrastructure developments such as the Penang LRT and airport expansion.
Loke, who is also DAP secretary-general, hit out at opposition leaders, including an opposition MP from Penang, for rejecting the RM16bil Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, describing their actions as an attempt to sabotage the state’s development.
He said DAP will continue to groom young leaders, adding that five of the party’s eight recently announced candidates for the upcoming Sabah election are under 40, including one aged 25.
He said the party wants more new faces to feature in elections, giving them the opportunity to gain experience.
Also present at the function were DAP adviser Lim Guan Eng, Penang DAP chairman Steven Sim and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Sim, in his speech, reminded members to stay grounded and to remember the party’s roots as a movement of ordinary people.
Sim, who is also Human Resources Minister, said his ministry has expanded PERKESO protection to 24-hour coverage and will set up more health facilities in the state.
