Real heroes unite Malaysians beyond race and religion, says Anwar

KOTA KINABALU: Real heroes are those who fight for the rights of all, regardless of race or religion, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said real heroes forge togetherness instead of instigating disunity, adding that

more leaders now present themselves as heroes of particular races.

Anwar questioned their motives as they had not raised these issues before and said that with an election drawing close, people should listen but think critically.

He said this when addressing crowds at the Semarak Madani event at SICC on Sunday (Nov 9), adding that as a Prime Minister of all Malaysians, he must care for all citizens.

“So think of Sabah and think of Malaysia as a whole, not just your own place,” he said and advised people to vote for leaders with integrity and values.

Anwar said common issues raised among Sabahans include the 40% net revenue allocation.

He added that he is also criticised for everything he does, saying that such matters must be addressed and discussed amicably.

Anwar also said that special grants and interim payments for Sabah and Sarawak followed discussion and agreement and added that payments were also based on the government’s financial situation at the time.

He added that other states also require attention but then said that those raising issues were once senior leaders.

Anwar said they had served as federal ministers and chief ministers in previous governments and added that some leaders urging people to fight had benefited in the past.

“I have always said, if you want to do something well, do it while in power. Now that you have retired, you raise issues. What is your motive,” he said.

Anwar added that he does not claim past leaders never did anything for Sabah.

“You can say it is not perfect or satisfactory. But you cannot deny we have done more and are committed to assist,” he added.

Anwar said this commitment is part of the government’s agenda and is not comparable to what was done in the past.

When reporters asked about Datuk Ewon Benedick’s resignation, he indicated he would respond.

He then left the venue without answering further.
