PETALING JAYA: Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) has reached another remarkable milestone in its pursuit of academic excellence, climbing to 109th place in Asia and 26th in Southeast Asia in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026.
The latest achievement marks a steady rise for the university, which was placed between 251 and 300 in 2013, before moving up to 131st position in 2025.
Its latest advancement to 109th place reflects UTAR’s consistent growth and commitment to excellence in teaching, research and global engagement.
In the 2026 ranking exercise, UTAR recorded significant improvements in three key indicators: inbound and outbound exchange students, and staff with PhDs, reflecting stronger academic quality and international engagement.
Furthermore, UTAR was also honoured with the QS Rating 5 Plus Stars Outstanding Award during the QS Higher Education Summit – Asia Pacific 2026 held in Seoul, South Korea, on Nov 6.
It was the only university to receive the highest distinction at the ceremony, which recognises institutions that achieved five-star ratings across all nine categories assessed.
These include Teaching, Research, Employability, Facilities, Global Engagement, Good Governance, Environmental Impact, Arts and Culture, and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
UTAR president Prof Datuk Dr Ewe Hong Tat said the recognition was a reflection of the collective dedication of the university’s community.
“UTAR’s steady advancement in the QS rankings is a reflection of the collective dedication of our staff, students, alumni and partners who continue to uphold the university’s vision and mission.
“This recognition affirms our ongoing pursuit of excellence through innovation, research and service to the community,” he said.
He added that the milestone strengthened UTAR’s position as a reputable Malaysian institution and an emerging presence in Asia’s higher education landscape.
UTAR’s recent advancement in rankings and the QS Rating 5 Plus Stars distinction highlight its success in international research collaboration, student and staff mobility, employer reputation, and sustainable institutional practices.
As the university continues to expand its global footprint, Dr Ewe said UTAR remains committed to nurturing talents who contribute meaningfully to society through education, innovation and integrity.
“These latest honours represent the collective effort, resilience and vision that define UTAR’s journey.
“With each milestone, we reaffirm our place among Asia’s emerging leaders in higher education,” he said.
